I'm not sure what Japanese would say, but I have to hear of actual Mana 
or Mayumi (from Second Impression) cosplayers. My guess is that it's 
about as canon as Yoda Stories or the like would be to Star Wars.

It's the same world, it's supposed to occur before the 4th child is 
selected, I think. But otherwise, the game doesn't have much in common 
with the series. It's essentially made to give Shinji some sort of a 
light-hearted and not-all-too-welly-motivated romance. I guess it's a 
nice break from all the EVA gloom, but it doesn't fit well into the 
story overall.
