I'm actually surprised at how vastly the soundtrack quality
of animes has improved in recent years. When I first
started watching the j-pop was something to be endured.
When introducing anime to people I had to fastforward
through the songs so they wouldn't walk out. EVA has some
surprisingly good music but later shows are even better.
Cowboy Bebop, need I say anything? Noir, despite being a
dreadful anime, has a magnificent soundtrack. Hellsing is
also utterly top-notch. 

Generally the trend is something good going bad so it's
always a wonderful thing when you can see something done
wrong go right. ;)
