Furi Kuri has that little intangible thing that makes it so perfect. 
Maybe its the profusion of Japanese puns, I'm a huge pun fan, or maybe 
its those insane manga scenes. But one of the things that I like about 
it is that it does take time out from the insanity for a bit of 
character development and some plot, a hard thing to do in a short 6 
episode OAV.

Gainax is very good at this, one of its newer shows Magical Shopping 
District Abranoshi, is a 13 episode parody show along the same lines of 
Excel Saga in that every episode is a parody of one aspect of Japanese 
culture. But Gainax was able to build in an excellent plot and some 
very good twists that made it very unique
