: Well, it's the claims that fans make that really confuse
: me. Nobody would ever call Sailor Moon deep. Many fans
: enjoy it for the cheese factor. Ok, that's cool. Now as for
: people who look at something like Noir and say it's got a
: great plot, it's like, what?! It seems bad in a truly
: self-evident way. If the fans said "We happen to like
: chicks with guns and subtle hints of yuri romance" then ok,
: I can see that. But some of the positive things said about
: various shows seem to go beyond matter of opinion, like if
: South Park were praised for it's "sumptuous animation."
:
: Well, I guess nobody else gets where I'm going here so I'll
: drop this line of discussion.

Over-hyping kills anything IMO. I knew & liked Excel Saga before ADV had
released their first disc. I first saw it (& FLCL) as fansubs. They were
fresh & different without any association with a licensee brand. I
bought ES on R2 for some volumes.

Seems like the VHS days of just giving us anime without bells & whistles
is sneered upon now, but then a title stood or fell on what it was like,
not on who licensed it & extras etc.

Noir is OK. There are better. Just another very AIC animation style
story. The hype is because it is a western type story and, like Big O
and Bebop, does not seem so alien to the general anime demographic. I'm
surprised Miami Guns & the new YUA OVA "No Mercy" have not been licensed
& hyped.

I'm constantly amazd Kenshin is so popular. Lots of blood I guess.
