It's not a rumor - VIZ *does* have the rights. I
confirmed it personally with Carl Horn at last year's
Anime Central. He said, "VIZ is still planning on
releasing the film. I told them 'Anything I can do to
push it along', but..." So it's still in limbo. If VIZ
was smart they'd have played on the renewed interest
in Anno/Eva and released it this month.

VIZ does have that live-action catalogue, and I was
expecting to see it when they began actively screening
films from that segment (Dead or Alive, etc.) but it's
not even listen on their site...
