0) The Evangelion English Mailing List Merchandising FAQ
0.0) Format of this document.
Each separate topic is marked with "x.y)" at the beginning. Square
brackets ("[x.y]") marks a reference to another topic.
Some terms are listed in both romanized Japanese and English. In those
cases the Japanese terms comes first.
Japanese romanization mostly follows the Hepburn system. But I don't have
a reference to that so it might not be exact. Kanjis are marked by initial
caps and Katakanas are marked by all caps.
0.1) What is this document about?
The Merchandising FAQ (also known as the EVA MFAQ) was created on March 22,
1999.) This section had become the largest sized section in the Evangelion
English Mailing List FAQ (known as the FAQ) and was separated to create its
own document.
The charter for this document is to contain entries of merchandise related
to the Japanese animated TV series "Neon Genesis Evangelion". The
definition of "merchandise" are items designed to promote the series and/or
offered for retail sale.
0.2) Diamond Comics "Previews" Catalogue and E-Mono
The majority of items listed in the MFAQ was culled from the Diamond Comics
"Previews" Catalogue. For a more complete list of merchandise the E-Mono
book has a complete catalogue of Japanese material available (see 1.3.10)
0.3) Where can I get the most up-to-date version?
Currently this document is only available by subscription to the English
Mailing List (see FAQ 0.3) or collected in a zipped format in the
Compuserve Anime/Manga Forum Library.
This document is posted to the mailing in the middle of the month by the
editor.

What surprises me the most when I first saw the box set is the size of the
box and the presentation as each box set comes with its' own plastic
carry/shopping bag. One side with the type Death (True)^2 And Rebirth on
the black background. On the other side is the type The End of Evangelion
on red background. While, it is a very nice touch, I think GAiNAX decided
to do so also is due to the fact that the box set is *unusually* big so
require a special carry bag for all Otaku to bring this limited item home.
Open the box, you will find 4 LD packaged into 2 sets. You will also find
MP Eva plush doll by Sega. A small Ayanami Rei glow-in-the-dark-
put-it-together-yourself-action-figure, special telephone cards, trading
cards, a limited edition transparent Unit 01 HG Bandai kit, a production
timeline book put together by Yamashita Ikuto (The Mecha Designer of Eva),
and finally, the 850 pages Storyboard book. For a little under $300 US, it
certainly is a nice "collector" item.
While the LDs are manufactured in CAV format, for the truly obsessive fans
one can finally go through the movies still frame by still frame...and for
just viewing pleasure CAV is simply much better than the regular CLV discs.
The covers of the LD insert are also very interesting. 2 of them are
pretty standard while the other 2 are simply breath taking. The 2 what I
consider as standard are the one with collage of Lilith of Kaworu which is
inspired by TV episode 24. The other one is a "action shot" of Unit 02
battling the MP Eva.
What's shocking and surprising is the other 2. One of the cover denote
JSDF soldiers before their attack on NERV. One can see the human side of
the soldiers while some are share conversations while the others are
playing with a little cat. This move by Project Eva certainly had put an
interesting editorial spin on the JSDF actions toward NERV. Like most wars
and attack, soldiers are simply following orders no matter how wrong they
are. At the same time, they are also human.
The other cover is also very interesting: we get to see what *might* be
happening after the strange movie ending. The illustration denote Shinji
standing up. We can see his back toward us and Asuka also got up from her
laid down position. This time around, she sits next to the standing Shinji
and they both are looking at the far away fallen giant Rei head. This
could very well be after Shinji finish crying and Asuka finally told him to
get off her chest. ^_^
Death (True)^2/Rebirth are simply what most of us got used to on VCD, or
fan sub, or the WOW TV broadcast. The added scenes in the Genesis series
LD are not included. There's also a very nice collection of the TV spots
and movie trailers. On the EOE LD, same rule applies, while I still yet
have to sit down and watch it in detail, I doubt there are something they
added for just this release. What's extra is the live action EOE trailer
with the cast of Misato, Rei, and Asuka in it which is missing from the
Genesis release.
Some other interesting tidbit that Yamashita Ikuto put together:
Evangelion was first proposed as a project by Mr. Anno on Sept. 20 1993.
The unique look and feel of Tokyo-03 was strongly influenced by the fact
that in 1994 GAiNAX relocated their office to the city of Mitaka (3 Eagles)
which gave them a new environment to visualized the the world of
Evangelion.
Mr Yamashita also included a few more sketches of early Evangelion mecha
design that is not included in the Evangelion Concept Design Work book.
ps-Just give you an idea how *big* the box set is, the Eva Box is the same
size of my Gundam LD Box which carries 52 episodes of the original Gundam.

Just wanted to point out some interesting things I noted in the storyboard
book which comes with the movie box set (I didn't get the plastic bag, nor
did I see it at any stores). I've only glanced through the book and for
the most part the anime seems to follow the storyboards but I did notice a
few changes (sorry, don't have my book with my so the following is kind of
sketchy):
* There was one scene planned for the early part of Air (immediately before
the scene where Misato is in her car at night thinking about humanity). It
starts with what looks like bombers flying overhead. Cut to the Children's
school which is in ruins (windows smashed, desks and tables strewn about).
Shinji, Toji and Kensuke are at the basketball court. Kensuke's using his
camera to film the bombers (I guess we find out why the bombers are there
not long after... ) and Toji's shooting hoops. He's sitting in his
wheelchair and has only one leg, but he does have both arms. Unfortunately
I don't know Japanese and can't tell what they're discussing. Anyone?
* Another scene which seems to have been removed from the final product
occurs during the JSSDF storming of the NERV HQ - some NERV personnel come
out of the wreckage with their hands in the air in surrender but a bunch of
JSSDF soldiers blow them away.
* Finally, in the One More Final sequence, Asuka's last line was changed.
Again, I can't read Japanese so if anyone's got the book... Anyway, I
think she was talking to Shinji (is the first word "anta"?) and I think the
word "kill" appears but I don't think "kimochi warui" (sp?) was there.
BTW, yes the book is really about 850 pages long but only perhaps 3/4 A4
page size.

Beethoven's Symphony No.9 in D minor started the concert (before that
was actually the first part of the interview with Sagisu Shiroh. His
other anime music work includes popular series like KOR).
Being someone that is not into classical music full-time in terms what
to listen to I have no expectations on what the live LD of a classical
concert is like. What strikes me the most is the conductor Derrick
Inoue which seems so young and precise (I think he must be under 45).
Through out the LD, there are about only 5% of the scenes are
interlace with the actually animation from the series (and there's no
EOE or Death/Rebirth scenes in this LD either).
Even though there is not a lot of actual "music video" like treatment,
but when it comes through it really ROCK! For example, Beethoven's
Symphony No.9 has scene from episode 24: Rei in Terminal Dogma,
Shinji, and Kaworu. Truly spectacular with the top half of the scene
from the anime and the lower half is the view of the concert hall.
Tokyo-03 and Eva-01 are pretty much the same as Evangelion Symphony
CD. Then we have the voice actress of Rei (Megumi) and Misato
(Mitsuishi Kotono) have a short introduction/MC. They both made fun
of and also mimic how Gendo putting his hand in front of his face.
Very funny stuff. Also, they also joked about who likes who in the
series...with Misato is pairing together with Kaji...Rei with Gendo
(yeh, I know), Asuka with Shinji kun and when they gotta to
Kaworu...both said, "Kaworu kun wa...???" I guess it's like "hum...."
in English. ^_^; The audience laughed.
Selection from Action Themes and Rei I are pretty much the same as the
Evangelion Symphony CD then we have Asuak's and Ritsuko's VA (Miyamura
Yuuko and Yamaguchi Yuriko) chit-chat about the series. I have to say
Yuuko is much, much, much cuter than I remember. I turned into
instant Yuuko fan. Truly liking her dress too. ^_^;
"Shinji" piece is the same...
Then we have Bach's Suite number. 1 & 3 for violin/cello solo in G
which we have talked about so much in some other threads on this ML.
We do see the players name displayed, but unfortunately it's only in
Kanji....I will try to translate that if some one request...So...the
cello player is not a 14 years old--instead he is a 20 something male
musician in this concert (you can actually see some of his gray hair
in a few cuts)...
What I also gather, is that, this live LD recording might be a
different day compare with the CD since certain arrangement seems to
be a lot different. Then we cut back to the interview with Sagisu
Shiroh and ended side One.
Side Two starts with Pachelbel's Canon 3 on A Ground in D Major (don't
ask me what that means) and we have 3 violin players and cello, and a
viola.
The one thing that is certainly noticeable (I notice that it is
different recording from the CD) is that by the end of the performance
one of the violin player actually start doing some pretty weird solo
stuff and cut to a loud bang (by synthesizer) and we have the rapper
Mali came on to stage and doin' his 'thing. I think the audience are
pretty shocked by a blond black guy, with nose ring, speaks with
English accent and dress like Denis Rodmand (sp?). ^_^; No matter
what, I think he is still a pretty good rapper there. I mentioned the
loud bang...that wasn't in the CD and the CD got the better
performance by Mali anyhow....then we cut into the symphony version of
Canno...
Thanatos is also great. This is the piece of music which truly lands
itself into a great symphonic arrangement. Truly moving and memorable
piece from the series....gosh...how I wish they did more of the "music
video" style editing in this LD.... -_-....
Covesation of Eva VA (Shinji (Ogata Megumi...the other Megumi), Asuka
(Yuuko), Maya (Nagasawa Miki). Yuuko changed into a new out fit!
^_^;
Selections from Ethnical Themes from Evangelion are mostly music that
one can find on EOE soundtrack and BGM 1. What makes this piece so
interesting is the use of projector to project Japanese words on
stage. Similar scenes that we see through out the series. This is a
quick capture of what's being displayed with my limited Japanese and
so, so Kanji skill. These are all literal translations:
the unforgiving other
the substitute opposite sex
the sudden humiliation
the anxiety of departure (from other)
the horror (scare?) of the other
dangerous thinking (wisdom)
the proud of taking chance (????)
mercy of the weak
the unhappy photo
the scar of the pass
the uncomfortable/embarrassing stage (?)
beyond common sense
question the value
combination of lust and love
return to the womb (!!!)
empty time ( the time here I think is being used as noun....so
timelessness?)
the vision of distraction
the fictional beginning
the continuation of reality
this, is the end of the dream"
This is in no way a full transcript since the LD cut to different part
of the concert so I am for sure missing a few lines here and there.
But the poetic words above can certain give you an idea of Anno's
thinking and Evangelion's Themes.
Fly me to the Moon. lllloonggg....very drowned out version. Wouldn't
care less and I like the Drum 'n Bass version much better (BGM Vol
3)...but the string part is certainly nice.
Conversation of VA of Maya and Ritsuko. Again, different from the CD.
We are missing a few jokes about Ritsuko and Maya's relationship.
Wink. Wink. ^_^;
Handel's Hallelaujh is very powerful consider that what we have is the
scenes that Asuka battling the 15th angle being displayed in the
projected background...The irony of joy which is what exactly opposite
to what Asuka was experiencing on scene...that is just so dame
powerful. 'enough said.
Then came the VA of Maya and Ritsuko giving flowers to the conductor
Derrick Inoue (BTW, he's a Japanese. Don't let the Western first name
fools you here.) Sagisu Shiroh being invited on stage and the full R&B
style Hallelaujh plus the string in the back. A very fun final
ogestral arrangement...
More interview with Sagisu Shiroh. End of LD.

These are the anime in book form, made from the anime cells with the
story description (and some of the dialog) on the side. They also
contains "Check points" which are backgrounds on the production or
storyline under each page, and usually an appendix or two with
character designs and such. Some of them are a bit brief, so they are
not very good replacements for the TV episodes. Still recommended for
easy lookup and the extra stuff. The 9 books contains all 26 TV
episodes. They are published by Kadokawa Shoten and is 590yen each.

1.3.1) Evangelion Manga
Sadamoto Yoshiyuki draws the Evangelion Manga. He takes on a slightly
different point of view from the TV episodes. It is pretty
interesting to see his interpretations of the events. It is
serialized in Kadokawa's magazine Shonen Ace-A. So far, 4 volumes of the
compilation have been published.
Volume ISBN
1 4-04-713115-6
2 4-04-713132-6
3 4-04-713165-2
4 4-04-713119-7
There was a short hiatus after the fourth volume, whilst Sadamoto laid out
the form of the manga plot line. The non-appearance of the manga explains
why it was rumoured that the series had been cancelled or discontinued.
In May 1999 a special edition, the "Special Evangelion Edition", of Shonen
Ace-A was published, collecting all published stories under one cover,
including those episodes not collected in the compiled volumes. (Price
Y780). Other features included depictions of Evangelion by Shonen Ace-A
staff artists, and a oil painting poster print of the Children.
In the June issue of Shonen Ace-A the serialisation will restart.

Front Cover:
And so . . . EVANGELION goes into action
In the Year 2015, entities called the "Angels" appear in
TOKYO-3. Mankind's only hope for survival is EVANGELION, the
muti-purpose humanoid fighting machine developed and constructed
by Nerv, a United Nations special agency. Summoned by his
father, the supreme commander of Nerv, 14-year-old Ikari Shinji
climbs aboard EVANGELION--and finds himself thrown willy-nilly
into a maelstrom of battle.
It is the year 2015. In TOKYO-3, Kanagawa prefecture, the
"Angels" pose a threat to mankind's future. In order to
annihilate them, the robot EVANGELION, a multi-purpose humanoid
fighting machine, is about to strike, carrying inside itself a
14-year-old boy who tells himself over and over that he mustn't
run away. What lies ahead for him-for us all...?
