Asuka is extremely contemptful of Shinji. Shinji is attracted because he
needs an alpha female as partner (being a beta male) & because of her
physique. There-is-no-affection. At all.
There is however a rapport which developed between Rei & Shinji, partly
because of their views of his father, partly because of thr Yui factor, and
because Rei is sympathetic, uncritical and unthreatening.

If in episode #1 Shinji has seen Asuka on the trolley bleeding & bandaged,
saying she needed no help, instead of Rei, who was silent and only
half-conscious, his involvement would have ended then & he would have walked
out IMO.
