The 1930 film "All Quiet on the Western Front" springs to mind. It's a
very faithful adaptation of the German novel and is #137 on the IMDB top
films of all time list. Granted, that's a book to film adaptation but my
central point is that you can make a good movie based on source from a
foreign culture.
